What counts as a dental emergency

Go to a hospital emergency department straight away if swelling is making it hard to breathe or swallow, if you have a high fever with facial swelling, or after a serious head or face injury.

What to do before you reach the clinic

Knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly, then put it back in the socket if you can or keep it in milk, and come in immediately; the first hour matters. Broken tooth: keep the pieces, rinse with warm water and use a cold compress for swelling. Toothache: take a painkiller you normally use, but do not place a tablet against the gum, and do not put heat on a swollen face.

What happens at the visit

  1. Call first. Tell the clinic what happened so you can be seen as soon as possible.
  2. Assessment. The problem is examined, with an X-ray where needed.
  3. Relief first. Pain and infection are brought under control, and the tooth is protected or repaired where possible.
  4. The plan. Any further treatment, such as a root canal, a crown or an extraction, is explained and booked.

Common emergencies and how they are treated

An infected or badly decayed tooth is often saved with root canal treatment, which the clinic's endodontist, Dr Varun Rajkumar, specialises in. A tooth that cannot be saved, a broken tooth below the gum, or a painful wisdom tooth may need an extraction by the oral surgeon, Dr Himanshu Gupta. Many emergencies start as small problems, so regular check-ups help prevent the next one.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do with a knocked-out tooth?

Hold it by the crown, put it back in the socket if you can or keep it in milk, and come to the clinic immediately. The sooner it is replaced, the better its chance.

Is facial swelling from a tooth serious?

It can be. Swelling means an infection is spreading and should be seen promptly. If it affects breathing or swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department straight away.

Can a badly aching tooth be saved?

Often, yes. An infected tooth can usually be saved with root canal treatment, done at the clinic by an endodontist.

Should I call before coming in?

Yes. Calling ahead lets the team fit you in and prepare for what you need.
