The options
- Self-ligating metal braces: strong and reliable for almost every kind of correction.
- Self-ligating ceramic braces: tooth-coloured brackets that are much less noticeable.
- Lingual braces: fixed to the back of the teeth, so they cannot be seen when you smile.
- Clear aligners (Invisalign): a series of removable, near-invisible trays. See our invisible aligners page for more.
Who it suits
Orthodontics treats crowded or overlapping teeth, gaps, overbites, underbites, crossbites and protruding front teeth. Straighter teeth are also easier to clean, which protects the gums. Adults can have treatment too, as long as the gums and bone are healthy; gum problems are treated first. Some complex bites respond better to fixed braces than aligners, and the consultation tells you which suits your teeth.
What happens, step by step
- Orthodontic consultation. The teeth, bite and jaw are examined, with X-rays, photographs and scans to plan the movement.
- Your plan. You are shown which option suits your case, what can be corrected and roughly how long it will take.
- Treatment. Braces are fitted and adjusted at regular visits, or aligners are changed on a schedule with check-ins.
- Retainers. Once the teeth are in place, retainers hold them there; without them, teeth tend to drift back.
Living with braces or aligners
Expect some soreness for a few days after braces are fitted or adjusted, or when a new aligner starts; it settles. With braces, brush carefully around the brackets and avoid very hard or sticky food. With aligners, wear them for most of the day and night and take them out only to eat and clean. Treatment usually runs over months, on a schedule you are given at the start.

Frequently asked questions
Braces or aligners: which should I choose?
It depends on your bite and your preferences. Fixed braces handle almost every correction; aligners suit many adult cases where appearance during treatment matters. The orthodontist explains which is right for your teeth.
Are lingual braces really invisible?
They sit on the back of the teeth, so they are not seen when you smile. They take a little longer to get used to when speaking.
Am I too old for braces?
Usually not. Teeth can be moved at any age if the gums and bone around them are healthy.
Why do I need a retainer?
Teeth tend to drift back towards where they started. A retainer holds them in their new position.
